Agreement signed for the construction of a desalination plant in the area of Episkopi, Limassol
An agreement was signed on Friday, at the Water Development Department, between the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Limassol consortium M. N - Limassol Water Co (which consists of the Israeli company Mekorot Development and Enterprise Ltd and the Cypriot company Netcom Limited), for the construction of a desalination plant in the area of Episkopi in Limassol, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Recourses and the Environment Dr Michalis Polynikis and the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Mrs Egli Pantelaki.
The plant will provide 40,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day with the provision to expand to 60,000 cubic metres a day.
The agreement was signed by the Director of the Water Development Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Recourses and the Environment Mr Sofoclis Aletraris on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and by Mr Giora Gutman of Mekorot Development and Enterprise Ltd and Mr Adamos Adamides of Netcom Limited on behalf of the consortium M. N. – Limassol Water Co.
The desalination contract is for 20 years and the sale price of water to the Water Development Department is €0,8725 per cubic metre.
The construction of the new desalination plant is an important project which will cover the water needs of Limassol.
The construction of the plant will begin immediately after the signing of the agreement, so that the desalination plant can operate within 24 months in accordance with the terms of the Contract.
